Florida has long been called the sunshine state, known for its warm climate. The state also enjoys an ample supply of sunshine. Photovoltaic solar panels have emerged as a viable process to convert the suns energy into electricity. One of the main factors in the effectiveness of solar power is directly related to available sunshine, with Florida on average at 70%.


Florida Power and Light in fact plan to capitalize on our abundant sunshine, by employing this technology. Completed October 2009 the 25 megawatt DeSoto Next Generation Energy Center is the largest photovoltaic plant in the country. Utilizing 90,500 panels the power plant is capable of supporting 3,000 homes. The benefits derived from the facility are many, including 400 constructions jobs; prevent over 575,000 tons of greenhouse gases being release into the atmosphere over the next 30 years or the equivalent of removing 4500 automobiles per year. Couple this with reducing the need for foreign oil while eliminating pricing volatility. Pretty impressive!

Well the news doesn’t stop there, the first solar powered city Babcock Ranch is starting to gain traction. Located in southern Punta Gorda near Fort Myers former NFL player Syd Kitson of Kitson & Partners has advance plans for the world’s largest solar powered city. The heart of the$350 million FPL plant would be 75 mega watt photovoltaic power facility, designed to support 19,500 homes, plus 6 million square feet of industrial and retail space. Promising to deliver 20 thousand permanent jobs over a span of 20 years, Babcock Ranch is truly the city of the future. The green light hasn’t turned for this 2 billion dollar development but serious consideration is being given at all levels.

So what’s this got to do with Port Charlotte Fl homes for sale or Punta Gorda homes for sale you ask…………… Well over the next 10 years maybe a lot. It’s looking more likely we will see photovoltaic technology transition to a viable cost effective source of clean energy. The combination of already having the largest working photovoltaic power plant and the possibility of the largest solar city in the world located in Charlotte County, Babcock Ranch will bring the spotlight to Punta Gorda.

All of this will have a positive impact I believe on property values for Port Charlotte Fl homes, as well as Punta-Gorda- Isles, Burnt-Store-Isles, Burnt-Store-Marina and the sounding area.
