Hi I’m Ken Poirier a resident and realtor spending most of my time focused on Punta Gorda homes for sales. Realtors are expected to be knowledgeable in many areas related to the local community. One thing I’m almost always asked is where can we find a good place to eat which leads to my question, what’s your favorite food and so on.
Well I decided to write about my favorite restaurants, not as a food critic, because I’m not, but about local establishments I enjoy going to and consistently experience quality many levels. This is my second review in a ongoing series of my favorite local restaurants. LuLu located in the beautiful Wyvern Hotel in downtown Punta Gorda is a little more elegant then most restaurants in the area but welcome casual attire. I would liken The Wyvern and LuLu to a European traditional hotel/restaurant arrangement, where it’s very common to find some of the finest restaurants located in hotel. The United States on the other hand is just the opposite; we have become accustom to poor service and along with a less than satisfying dining experiences associated with hotel dining. No worries at LuLu, nothing but first class on all levels offering that European style with American flair.
Judy and I decide to try one of the many specials offered on the two dinner entrees for the price of one. Mind you we don’t go out of our way to find cheap meals, always preferring quality over just price. We started the evening with a Caesar Salad, but different, it was actually a lightly “grilled Caesar Salad” adding a level of smokiness to this tasty salad. She opted for the Shrimp Scampi while I picked the Latin Grilled Churrasco and where equally fantastic. The scampi was really kicked-up a notch with a sauce based on three types on Italian cheese asiago, parmesan and manchego, it was rich and full of flavor. My meal was a skirt steak served over crispy potatoes, heirloom tomatoe basil salad topped with Argentinean Chimichurri steak sauce, traditional made with garlic and parsley among other tasty spices suspend in red wine or sherry vinegar. The dish features 11 oz of tender juice steak which I finished the following day.
We decide to live dangerously and went over the top by indulging in dessert which are made at the restaurant and are quite unique. Judy enjoyed Mexican Churros, sugar dusted cinnamon sticks and chocolate dipping sauce. I had sponge cake, soaked in three different types of milk (not sure what kind) with a hint of rum. We enjoyed both desserts, which were different and yummy.
Service was exceptional all night. The atmosphere is relaxing while the dining area is nicely kept. Finally while many may have the perception that LuLu is an expensive restaurant the two for one entrée special is a tremendous value, making this dining experience very affordable.
One benefit of enjoying a fine meal at LuLu you can relax prior to or after dinner or both on the Wyvern Rooftop/Pool/Bar/Lounge with the best view in Punta Gorda. LuLu located on the first floor of the Wyvern Hotel on US 41 north right in the middle of historic downtown Punta Gorda.
