Downtown Punta Gorda enjoys the benefits of Laishley Park on many levels. Surrounded by this historic city on 3 sides, while to the north it’s flanked by the Peace River, offering great views no matter what time of day it is. The park is also purposeful with its own marina and multi use commercial area but more on that aspect later.
Laishley Park located at 100 Nesbit Street is just one of many fine parks in Punta Gorda and is interconnected via sidewalks to Gilchrist and Ponce de Leon Park roughly 4 miles away. The downtown River Walk sidewalk meanders through Laishley Park connecting all features of this fine location. You will find a beautiful Gazebo with pond, playground and water park fountains for the children to enjoy. Fantastic fishing can be found on the new pier on the Peace River. Picnic tables and gardens are dotted throughout the park for your enjoyment.
Annually the park is host to numerous events like this past weekend’s Fourth of July’s Fireworks Show. Grammy award winning group, The Blues Travelers held a live concert this past October, while each winter it plays host to the popular Jazz Wine and Cheese Festival. ESPN’S Redfish Cup, sites Punta Gorda, one of its favorite stops of this national fishing tournament, attracting thousands of visitors.
Punta Gorda became national headlines August 13, 2004, for being ground zero to Hurricane Charley and its punishing blow. Laishely Park was chosen as the site, for “Spirit of Punta Gorda”, comprised of a palm tree sculpture and sundial, memorializing the exact time the hurricane hit but more importantly the monument reflects the spirit of the citizen who have not only restore the town but have taken it to new heights.
Laishley Park Marina is a beautiful new award winning marina that seamlessly blends into the park. Boasting 85 slips, 47 trailer spaces, Ship Store and many more amenities, this designated “Florida Clean Marina” is a popular spot for boaters.
Views from Laishley Park
Rounding out the park is a spectacular commercial building complex, housing the now famous “Laishley Crab Shack” and various shops. The “Laishley Crab Shack” while offering “taste treats” has fanatic views of the Peace River and is unlike any shack you have ever seen. This unique building displays hand carved wood throughout and craftsmanship seldom seen these days.
