Charlotte Harbor, often overlooked, is now positioned to make that a thing of the past!
When you think of Charlotte Harbor most will immediately focus on the second largest estuary in Florida which is Charlotte Harbor and they would be correct. However, there’s another Charlotte Harbor which is the strip of land on the north side of the Peace River sandwiched between Punta Gorda to the south and Port Charlotte to the north.
Charlotte Harbor, often forgotten or simply overlooked, is now positioned to make that a thing of the past. Fast forward to today and all eyes are on this little known area with the development of Sunseeker Resort which is starting to take hold and will soon dominate the harbor waterfront with a gleaming new resort. The resort is planning to have 500 hotel rooms another 180 extended stay condo type units plus 10 restaurants. Pretty aggressive but Sunseeker is owned by Allegiant Airline and Travel Company who have deep pockets, a detailed business plan and their own airline to entice visitors to the area. Their confident this venture will be successful. It may take some time, but I believe it will prove to be true.
This section of Charlotte Harbor has not generated much interest and has remained unattractive since Hurricane Charley but that’s about to change. The little land area called Charlotte Harbor will benefit from the exposer Sunseeker will bring. Surrounding neighborhoods should attract more interest. Vacant land will see new construction while the 3 condo complexes of Peace River Preserve on the Water, Preserve at Charlotte Harbor and Roll’s Landing will get a lot more attention. The popular Harborwalk sidewalk will now extend from Fishermen’s Village in Punta Gorda and connect at Live Oaks Park which in turn will connect to the boardwalk in front of Sunseeker Resort. And continue on and link it to Bay Shore Live Oaks Park.
Also, in discussion is the development of waterfront taxi system to serve both sides of the harbor. Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda will enjoy an economic boost as the resort unfolds. Primarily driven by an increase of visitors who have become aware of the area via Allegiant Airlines who are now flying to and from 40 plus destination out of Punta Gorda Airport.
Charlotte Harbor is renown for its beautiful waterfront neighborhoods which are many. Always ranked high as a boating/sailing and fishing destination Charlotte Harbor in conjunction with the Peace River and Myakka River make this area unique. Couple that with the Intercostal Waterway and Gulf of Mexico just at the end of the harbor and you have a world class boating and fishing right here.
